The most important thing to remember when purchasing lighting for your saltwater fish tank is to use the proper bulbs.

The types of bulbs you can choose from include:

  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Very High Output
  • Halide bulbs

Fluorescent bulbs work great for fish tanks with around 60 gallons of water; however, you will need two. Some people prefer one 10,000k bulb along with an actinic blue bulb. If you have coral in your fish tank, you should have four fluorescent bulbs.

Very High Output or VHO lights are for the hobby reef system. They do not produce as much heat as florescent bulbs.

Halide bulbs are for building coral reefs.
